Slow drainage near the trap
Sinks or floor drains near the grease trap draining more slowly than usual is often the first sign that grease and solids have built up enough to restrict flow through the trap.
Odor around the trap or drain lines
A sour or rotten smell near the trap, or coming up through nearby drains, usually means trapped grease has been sitting long enough to start breaking down — a sign cleaning is overdue, not just due.
Visible grease buildup
If the lid is accessible and grease is visibly at or near the top layer, the trap is close to losing its ability to separate grease from wastewater effectively.
